Our For Every Body family has recently been touched by the story of one of our own, Steven Hansgen and his Mother, Christine Hansgen.
Steven grew up in a home where his Mother was the neighborhood mom. If she wasn't baking cookies for visiting friends, she was sewing a Halloween outfit, or picking vegetables from her garden to give to the needy. When Steve's Dad was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Christine took on the responsibilities of a fulltime job, along with taking care of her husband. She was happiest when she was helping others, and really enjoyed the time she spent volunteering with the handicap.
Two years ago Steven's Mother was diagnosed with a rare form of heart disease that has changed her lifestyle completely. Once a healthy vibrant mother, grandmother, and neighbor, Christine is no longer able to do all she once did. Her heart is working at only 21 percent of the rate that it should be. Christine's health is deteriorating and her medical expenses are on the rise. Doctors say the only cure for her condition is to have a heart transplant. Although her health is failing quickly, Christine is unable to get onto the transplant waiting list until her heart is working at only 18 percent.
According to the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network there are currently 87,005 people waiting for some type of transplant. It is estimated that each day about 70 people receive an organ transplant, yet another 16 people on the waiting list die because not enough organs are available.
Because of this real life experience, we at For Every Body have decided to expand our Candles For A Cause line and dedicate a candle to Organ Donation. This candle will be called Have a Heart and be a sugar cookie scented candle available in a nine ounce jar. With purchase of this candle you will receive display signage to help promote organ donation. Portions of all proceeds will go to help support those that are waiting for an organ donation.
